Garden Construction

Create a Space for Engagement

One main goal was to construct a vegetable garden that will be easily maintainable by Boys and Girls Club students for years to come. I wanted to establish a gardening club of interested students, so they understood that it was their responsibility and they had autonomy over what they grew there.

Sustainability Education

Spreading Awareness

I hoped to run sustainability education programs for students to learn how they can maintain their garden and care for their environment through other actions. I also wanted to share gardening resources with the full Tacoma community by hosting a community event with resources and information from local nonprofits supporting urban farming and fresh produce food security.

Project Leadership

Concept to Completion

A personal development goal for my time at Duke is learn how to lead independent projects from ideation to execution. In the future, if there are other community engagement projects that I want to work on, I will be better prepared to lead the project.
